What is speedgolf?
Golf played fast. Your score is your strokes plus your time, so a quick round only wins if the golf is good too.
How scoring works
The clock starts when you hit your first tee shot and stops when your ball drops into the cup on the last hole. Add your total strokes to your time in minutes and seconds. That is your speedgolf score.
Someone who shoots 88 in 52 minutes 30 seconds scores 140:30. A player who shoots 80 but takes 65 minutes scores 145:00. Fast and steady beats slow and perfect.
The basics
- Normal golf rules apply. Every stroke counts and every ball is holed out.
- Carry less. Most players take five to seven clubs in a light carry bag, or just hold them.
- Leave the flag in. Putting with the flagstick in saves time.
- Move between shots. Run, jog or walk briskly. Pick a pace you can hold for the whole round.
- Nine or eighteen. Both count. Nine holes is a great way to start.
Your first round
- Ask your course. Call the pro shop and ask to go out first thing in the morning, before regular tee times, or in the evening once the course has cleared. Check our map for courses that already welcome speedgolf.
- Pack light. Try a driver or hybrid, a 7 iron, a wedge and a putter. Add a club or two if you like.
- Start your watch on the first tee shot. Stop it when your last putt drops.
- Add it up. Strokes plus minutes. Write it down; that is your number to beat.
- Be a good guest. Replace divots, rake bunkers, stay off greens with your running shoes when they are wet, and never play through without asking.
Questions
Do I need to be a runner?
No. Plenty of speedgolfers walk fast and jog a little. Your pace is up to you, and it improves quickly.
Will my course allow it?
Most courses are happy to have players who move quickly, especially at quiet times. Ask the pro shop, and offer to go out first in the morning or in the evening once the course is quiet.
What should I wear?
Running shoes or light spikeless golf shoes, and clothing that meets your course's dress code.
Is it good for my golf?
Many players find they swing more freely when there is no time to overthink. It also builds fitness that helps in regular rounds.
